Hi CSC subcomms!

The next CSC event is finally round the corner!

TPCSC would be organising Project “Books for a Cause”! This event aims to reach out to the TP students and staff to collect 2nd-hand books in an effort to raise funds for the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH). Donated books will be put on sale during our fundraising event in November 2011 and all sale proceeds will go towards SAVH for purchase of more audio and braille books. Unsold books will be donated to Salvation Army.

If you are an interested book donor, please ensure that the donated books are in generally good condition so that they could be used for resale.

The details of the event are as follows:
Date: 2^nd and 3^rd August 2011 (Tue & Wed)
Time: 11am–4pm
Venue: TP Plaza (Outside Library)

Come support this meaningful cause by simply either passing us your book at the booth or placing your books at the bookdrop counter located at the plaza!

Involve your fellow friends and lecturers in this meaningful event too and we hope to see you there!

Blood Donation Drive Organised by Tzu Chi Foundation‏

Important details to take note:

To ensure your health and well-being, you are encouraged to come forward and make a blood donation only if you:
* Are between 16 and 60 years old;
* Weigh at least 45 kg;
* Have a haemoglobin level of at least 12.5 g/dl;
* Are in generally good health;
* Have not had any symptoms of infection for at least 1 week e.g. sore throat, cough, runny nose, diarrhea; and
* Have not had a fever in the last 3 weeks.

* People with high blood pressure, on long term medication including supplement, diabetes and some other common diseases will be rejected for donating blood.

Note: TPCSC will not be heading this event. For those who are interested, please sign up directly at the venue as stated above.

Singapore Children’s Society Walk for Our Children

The Singapore Children’s Society is having its annual Walk for Our Children fundraising event on Sunday, 24 July 2011.

In a move to inspire children to work towards making their dreams come true, the theme set for this year’s walk is “Sweet Dreams”.

Together with the Cosplay community, it will be creating a carnival-like atmosphere that promises an exciting day of fun-filled activities for you and your family.

In addition to the 3km walk, there will be a treasure hunt, design-a-lollipop competition, a huge Candy House, inflatable bouncy castles, live music, a variety of games stalls, plenty of food options to satisfy varying palates and more!

City Colours 2011 - ‎"Onward Singapore!"

'City Colours 2011' is a project which aims to engage students from local tertiary institutions to express their creativity in line with the 2011 NDP theme “Majulah! The Singapore Spirit”, by dressing a plot of land up with creative expressions of their love and pride for Singapore.

TP's City Colours installation, called "Onward Singapore", was designed by School of Design, Visual Communications (Juniors)- Lam Yik Chun, Cassandra Tse and Ivan Woo and have been painted and put up on site together with the help of the rest of the school. It portrays the artistic impression of our country in vibrant colours. (More information about their work can be found at the album).

Hair for Hope @ TP 2011

Ever wondered how a simple act of shaving your head could do a good deed? Well, a record total of 110 shavees did just that at the annual Hair for Hope @ TP event.

Into its second run this year, the event was held on 6 July, 11am to 2pm, right outside TP library. The inaugural run of the event in 2010 attracted a total of 69 shavees.

The plaza came to life at 11am. With a warm introduction by our 2 lovely emcees, Georgina and Jing Heng, the event kicked off with the first 6 hair shavees up on stage to have their head shaved! Within seconds, they were transformed into BOTAKS!

It was indeed heartening to see so many students who came down during lunch time to support their friends and fellow school mates who were shaving. And many of them showed their support by taking lots and Lots and LOTS of photos! Others were so excited that they cheered non-stop!

I was initially shocked by the overwhelming response during the event. I remembered I was going around taking photos and that was when I noticed a queue forming at the registration booth. No, it was not because the volunteers at the booth were too slow in handling the registrants. There were just too many new walk-in hair shavees! Nevertheless, the volunteers were really efficient in handling the unexpected surge in new signups well.

The twitterverse was abuzz with the huge amount of publicity generated for the event. Many students were tweeting about Hair for Hope on twitter, using the hashtag #HairForHope, with @temasekpoly twitter taking the lead. Thanks @temasekpoly for live tweeting during the event! Not to forget, thank you to the various P10 clubs' who tweeted about #HairForHope on Twitter as well! Of course, our very own CSC twitter (@tp_csc), also provided non-stop live updates as the event progressed. If you haven't follow us, do so now @tp_csc !

One twitter user, @Cheryluvvvvv, commented, "Today, all the botaks look so cute because they all have a kind heart (:”

Tweeter @emilyoly, said, “I find the couple that shaved tgt so sweet la omg *envy*”

A twitter user, @NetDenNail, was so excited that he exclaimed, “WILL ALL TP STUDENTS REPORT TO LIBRARY TO WITNESS THE TRANSFORMATION OF A MOHAWK TO A BOTAK!!!!!!”

Another twitter user, @FaTahK said, "I am so proud to be called a TP student because we have the most number of volunteers for #HairForHope in Singapore!”

Indeed, Hair for Hope @ TP broke a national record this year. Temasek Polytechnic has the most number of hair shavees among all satellite events in Singapore! A total of 114 hair shavees! And this would not have been possible without the awesome help from our volunteers, hair shavees, donors and all who came down to support in one way or another! Thanks TP!

The response to the event was so great that students came forward to ask for the next date the event will be carried out. Twitter user, @moment2reasure commented, “Straight after the walk-in registration was announced closed, a student came forward to ask when is the next #HairForHope!”

Our president, Keith Lim, has one simple wish for himself. He said this as he touched his bald head, “With Hair for Hope over, now let’s Hope for Hair!”

On behalf of TPCSC, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to the success of Hair for Hope @ TP event in one way or another, from the hair shavees and our helpful volunteers to our awesome TP supporters and donors!

A special SHOUTOUT to those females who made their tough decisions and mustered enough courage to shave their head!

And a special THANK YOU to Joshua Bala, our 2nd-time hair shavee, who came down to #HairForHope depsite being in his crutches and in his wheelchair! I was sincerely touched by his kindness and have never seen such a kind person in my life before :)

Shaving your head is an act to show children with cancer and their families that they are not alone in their fight against cancer and that it is OK for them to be bald.

If you don't want to shave your head, you can still support by making a monetary donation! Hair for Hope @ TP 2011 is around the corner! We would like to extend our invitation to all of you, our dearest subcomms to become a shavee! We have reserved special slots for all of you on the actual day of Hair for Hope @ TP 2011 to shave your hair!

TPCSC - AGM Registration Closed‏

HI CSC SUBCOMMS!

Thanks to all who have shown great enthusiasm in wanting to participate in our AGM AY11/12! (: However, we will be closing the registration for helpers and guests now due to the overwhelming response.

On the first day of registration, we have received more than enough helpers. Hence we have accepted 70 more of you to join us as guests based on first come first serve basis in addition to the 12 helpers.

A separate email will only be sent to successful applicants by 23rd June. For those who are not selected, we apologise that we are unable to take in so many guests for our AGM due to the lack of space. However, we will like to thank you for showing your support towards CSC!

We would be extending the deadline for signing up once again for recruiting of shavees for Hair For Hope @ TP 2011 as we received feedbacks that many did not know about our previous extension.

The recruitment will be extended till 21^stJune, 5.30pm.

To Register as Shavee

1. Register in person at Student Development Centre (SDC) level 2 (Mensa building), by approaching the counter staff with the consent form. Staff & Alumni shavee are not required to submit the consent form (click here to download consent form)

2. Upon registering, shavees will be required to choose a shaving time slot.

"Hair for Hope @ TP 2011" - Recruitment for Hair Shavees

Dear CSC-ians,

Hair for Hope @ TP 2011 is a satellite event organised by TP Community Service Club (CSC) and Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF) which aims to raise funds and create awareness on childhood cancer. Every shaven head represents an understanding by an individual of the ordeals that a child with cancer is subjected to. By volunteering to shave, the shavees become CCF’s ambassadors in spreading childhood cancer messages to their family, friends, and colleagues when garnering monetary support from them.

Objectives of Hair For Hope

1. Create awareness of childhood cancer in Singapore

2. Show to children with cancer and their families that they are not alone in their fight against cancer

3. Boost the self-esteem of children undergoing chemotherapy by letting them know that there is nothing wrong in losing their hair or being bald

4. Raise funds to help children with cancer and their families

In 2010, Hair for Hope @ TP recruited 72 shavees, including 8 females. A total of $17,016.90 was raised to help the children with cancer and their families.

Hope everything has been fine for you in this new AY!

Good news for everyone! TPCSC is going to organise 'Hair for Hope @ TP 2011' for a kick start in this new AY!

This event is supported by the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF). Students and staffs in Temasek Polytechnic and as well as members of the public are strongly encouraged to shave their heads in support for the children with cancer.

The aim of this event is to:
1. Create awareness of childhood cancer in Singapore
2. Show to children with cancer and their families that they are not alone in their fight against cancer

YWCA Flag Day 2011

YWCA Flag Day 2011

Background on YMCA

Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) was founded in 1875. The Association has come a long way from its humble beginnings of organising enrichment classes for young overseas Chinese girls to the recognisable brand name it is today, providing programmes and services to help promote welfare and improve the quality of life of the underprivileged in our community.

The proceeds raised from the Flag Day will be used to finance the Association’s various community and welfare services which are open to all regardless of race, gender or religion:

– Hungry No More (Meals-on-Wheels for Elderly). This programme distributes free nutritious meals to over 100 needy, frail and homebound elderly on a daily basis from Mondays to Fridays. A total of $140,000 is required per annum and we are still looking into expanding this service.

– Hungry No More (Meals-on-Wheels for Children). This programme distributes free nutritious dinners to over 100 children from low-income families on a daily basis from Mondays to Fridays. An estimated sum of $150,000 per annum is needed to run this programme for the next 3 years.

– Hungry No More (Sustenance for Families). Families who do not qualify for public assistance but are in need of help receive assistance in the form of dry rations like rice, cooking oil and toilet rolls. This programme requires an estimated amount of $50,000 yearly to sustain it.

– The YWCA Kids’ Club. This is a programme that aims to help the beneficiaries of the Hungry No More (Meals-on-Wheels for Children) programme to realise their potential through social, emotional, moral and academic support. An annual sum of $15,000 is required to run the Club.

– “YES U CAN... BE INCLUDED!” This is an integration programme for pre-school children with mild learning disabilities in cognitive, learning and behavioural issues. It provides pre-school education for these children in a normal child care environment, with the purpose of integrating them into the mainstream schools. The programme requires a funding of $90,000 per annum for the next 3 years to run it.

– Financial Assistance Programme to help needy children attending our Child Development Centres who are unable to pay the full amount of fees. A sum in excess of $30,000 per year is disbursed to these families.

– Bursary Scheme for children on the Hungry No More (Meals-On-Wheels for Children) Programme to motivate them to improve their studies and affirm their talents in other areas like sports and art. An estimated amount of $10,000 per annum is needed to sustain the scheme for the next 3 years.

Team Temasek Day

Team Temasek Day is set aside to recognize the achievements of the Sports & Arts group of Temasek Polytechnic. The objective of this day is to instill the Team Temasek spirit and encourage the student population to be part of Team Temasek, especially so in the new freshmen that will be entering TP, bringing out the spirit in them early.

TPSC has only 2 requests to make, only 2! To wear a ‘Red’ top (i.e. Shirt, Tee-Shirt, Dry-fit, Tank-top, etc) and to spread the word to wear Red! Red is the colour of TP which represents Passion and Spirit and I strongly hope and believe that we could all come together for this 1 day in unison for the sake of the Sports & Arts group of Temasek Polytechnic. Not for yourselves, and not for TPSC, but for the school.

But you may still ask, “Why should I wear Red? I don’t really support our school’s activities anyway!” Here’s why! Because its time you light that Team Temasek fire in you! And did I forget to mention? If you wear Red on that day, the 29th April 2010, you qualify to win an Ipod Touch and we are giving out 5x of $50 worth of World of Sport voucher as well!

So what do you need to do again? Just Wear Red! Tell Everyone! Tell them on Facebook! Tell them when school reopens! Tell them every moment that you take in oxygen!

Each and every one of you, may be only a single person, but your little contribution will go a long way in telling the teams of Temasek, “I’ve got the Team Temasek Spirit!”, which means the world to them.

CDC/CCC Polytechnic Bursary FAQs

1. How do I know if I am eligible for this bursary?

You are eligible if you are a Singaporean, a full-time diploma student, have a gross monthly household per capita income (PCI) of $850 and below and not receiving other scholarship/study grant in the current academic year.

2. How do I calculate the gross monthly household per capita income (PCI)?

Per capita income (PCI) = Total gross monthly family income/ Number of family members

3. How much will I get if I am granted the bursary?

You will receive $1800 per year.

4. Do I need to re-apply for this bursary next year if I am still eligible?

Yes, you will need to do so.

5. How do I apply for this bursary?

Please log on to your student portal and print out the application form. Submit the completed form with supporting income documents. After which, you are to collect the endorsed application from SDC between 23- 27 May 2011. Lastly, you are to proceed to the nearest CC to submit the endorsed original form between 1- 9 June 2011.

6. When can I submit the completed form and the supporting income documents?

If you are from BUS, HSS & IIT, you can submit your form and documents from 25 April to 4 May. If you are from ASC, DES & ENG, you can submit your form and documents from 5-13 May 2011.

7. Where do I submit my completed form and supporting income documents to?

Please proceed to Student Development Centre (SDC) Blk 30, Level 4 (Same block as the bookshop).

8. When will I be notified of the results?

The respective CCs will notify you by post. We cannot confirm when the exact date will be.

A. CDC/CCC-Polytechnic Bursary AY2011/2012

The CDC/CCC-Polytechnic Bursary enables needy students to pay for 80% of their tuition fees .

Full time diploma students who meet the following criteria may apply for this financial scheme:

a. Singapore citizens.

b. Gross monthly household per capita income (PCI)* of $450 and below OR Gross monthly income of $1,800 & below.

c. Currently residing in a HDB 4-room flat or smaller.

*Per Capita Income (PCI) = Total gross monthly family income

Number of family members

Value of Award

$90 per month or up to $1,080 per academic year upon application approved by PCF.

C. MUSLIM TRUST FUND ASSOCIATION (MTFA) BURSARIES AND MERIT AWARD AY2011/2012

The Muslim Trust Fund Association (MTFA) invites applications for the MTFA Bursaries and Merit Award 2011 from Muslim students who are pursuing courses in institutes of higher learning.

Criteria:

Applicants must be Singapore citizens or Permanent Residents of Muslim descent

Applicants must be pursuing a course of study in the Polytechnic

Household income of applicant must not exceed $4,000 per month

Application forms can be obtained at the MTFA Office, Darul Ihsan Orphanage Building, 5 Matter Road during office hours. The forms can also be downloaded from the MTFA website (www.mtfa.org).

All completed application forms must reach MTFA office, by 5.00pm on 18 April 2011. Applications forms that are incomplete or late will not be considered.

D. SINGAPORE INDIAN EDUCATION TRUST Achievement Awards AY2011/2012

SIET is a community based, non-profit organization, which over the past four decades has provided support for the pursuits of deserving Singaporean Indians to help realize their potential.

The Trust is inviting Indian Singaporeans currently studying at ITEs, Junior Colleges, Polytechnics and Universities to apply for the prestigious SIET Achievement Awards which are awarded annually to students who have the inclination to serve the community and have done very well in their course of study.

Criteria:

Applicants must be Singapore citizens or Permanent Residents of Indian descent

Completed at least one year in the institution with excellent academic results

Outstanding CCA records and involvement in community work

Recipients of the Award are to give an undertaking to SIET to help with our future projects and community work.

Value of Award: Polytechnics – S$ 1,500

Registrations are opening from Tuesday, 1^st March 2011. Closing date for applications is Monday, 16^th May 2011. Short listed candidates will be invited for an interview and those selected will receive their awards at an awards presentation ceremony on Saturday, 16^th July 2011.

E. TP CARE FUND

The purpose of TP Care Fund is to provide additional financial assistance to students affected by the financial crisis in particular for those affected by a reduction in household income as a result of retrenchment or income reduction of household income contributor(s).

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

1. Be a full-time student on the tuition grant scheme.

2. Recipient of at least one financial assistance scheme in the same academic year, e.g. CCN Financial Scheme, Mendaki Subsidy Scheme, Bursary, etc.

3. Experiencing reduction in household income as a result of retrenchment or income reduction of one or more household income contributors

TENURE AND VALUE OF AWARD

$300 per semester per applicant. A separate application must be submitted for each new semester.

‘Volunteer @ MWS’ is a volunteer session at Mdm Wong's Shelter (MWS). MWS is an animal shelter, housing both cats and dogs. We aim to help them by cleaning the cages of the shelter, bathing the dogs and walking the dogs.
